Michael Vaughan said most of his impact this session of the Legislature was in the Insurance and Financial Services Committee, which dealt with health insurance reform among other issues.

The committee worked on several bills to reform how health insurance is administered in the state, with the goal of moving toward a universal health care system. Talks will continue over the summer. Vaughan offered his own bill to lower the cost of health insurance, which also was carried over to the next session.

Most of what the committee agreed on regarding Dirigo Health went into the governor’s bill, Vaughan said.

The committee also reported out a bill to combat predatory lending and held over a piece of legislation to mandate insurance coverage for Lyme disease.

In his committee, Vaughan pushed a bill to mandate medical insurance coverage for temporomandibular joint disorder – TMJ – which is not currently covered. The measure failed on the floor.

Vaughan also pushed a bill to lower the income tax, repeal motor vehicle inspection laws and provide an income tax exemption for active-duty military pay, all of which failed.
