SIDNEY (AP) – A new boat launch has opened on central Maine’s Messalonskee Lake, replacing one that was closed because of an infestation of milfoil.

The state Conservation Department said the opening of the new launch off Route 23 in Sidney last week came ahead of schedule.

Milfoil is an invasive aquatic plant that can quickly take over lakes and ponds. It was discovered near the old launch, which is now open only to craft that can be hand-carried.

The new boat launch will be named Lombard Landing, for Alvin Lombard, whose family once owned the property. A Vassalboro native, Lombard invented the Lombard log hauler, which revolutionized the logging industry a century ago and became a prototype for tracked vehicles built today.
