OXFORD — They started rolling in by the truckload last week, but some of them have been here since May.

Campers, trailers, fifth-wheels – even tents – are scattered across several acres of land adjacent to Oxford Plains Speedway.

Saturday, the party started early. Some campers pounded stakes into the ground and got out a set of horseshoes. Others continued to roll in. Some made it into the pit area to scope out the cars that will circle the 3/8th-mile oval Sunday and to watch practice. Still others sat out in folding chairs, fired up the barbecue and cooked a continuous feast of lunch-melding-into-dinner that lasted all afternoon.

One group of campers drove around the grounds, crowding as many people into the back of their pickup truck as they could. People hopped on and off as they slowly circled the dirt paths.
