BANGOR (AP) – About 90 Maine Army National Guard soldiers returned to Maine on Sunday after serving more than a year in Iraq.
The Security Force Two unit was greeted by hundreds of cheering friends and family members after arriving at the Army Aviation Support Facility following a bus ride from Fort Dix, N.J. The unit is comprised of soldiers from a variety of units in the Army National Guard.
While stationed in Camp Navistar, Iraq, the soldiers conducted force protection, convoy security and route clearance operations. The soldiers conducted more than 1 million miles of convoy security throughout Iraq, according to Maine Guard officials.
The unit suffered one fatality and one serious injury.
Sgt. Richard Parker of Phillips was fatally injured last month when a roadside bomb went off near his vehicle during combat operations. Spc. David Saucier was seriously wounded in May while conducting security operations and is now at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
