CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A nurse’s aide was convicted Thursday of stealing credit cards from a paralyzed Northfield man he worked for and buying over $1,000 of merchandise.

Jeffrey Smith of Tilton was sentenced to a year in jail, with all but 90 days suspended.

Smith was placed on probation for two years, ordered to pay back full restitution and not have any contact with the victim.

Smith also was ordered not to care for any elderly, disabled, or impaired adult for five years.

In January, Smith repsonded to an ad that the victim placed in a newspaper seeking an in-home care professional. The attorney general’s office says within days of starting to work for the man, Smith entered his safe and took two credit cards. Prosecutors say he used the cards to pay his own utility bill and buy items at stores in Laconia, Tilton and Franklin.

Smith was arrested by the Tilton Police Department when a store clerk noticed that the card Smith was attempting to use did not belong to him.
