Carthage – Elijah “Tiger” White, 92, of Carthage, died early Monday morning at his home on the Berry Mills Road.

He was born Sept. 14, 1914, a son of Elmer and Flora (Scribner) White and received his education in local schools. On March 18, 1934, he married Helen Mae Worster in Upton. She died in 2004.

He was a self-employed woodsman and lumberman and had been an original inventor of the modern day skidder. He was an active member of the Carthage community and was a member of the Carthage Historical Society and the Mystic Tie Masonic Lodge, 154, AF and AM, of Weld. He enjoyed stock car racing, having been a driver himself, and was a member of the Maine Motor Sports Hall of Fame, being inducted in 2005. Tiger was an avid Red Sox fan and a member of the Maine Logger’s Museum.

He is survived by his children, Elijah White Jr. and his partner, Sue Cousens, of Windham, Marie Conant of Waterville, Wayne White and his wife, Emmy, of Carthage, Gloria Ellis and her husband, Ronald, of Carthage, Ronald White of Carthage, Meredith Robbins and her husband, Randy, of Dixfield, and Doreen Smith and her husband, Dean, of Ooltewah, Tenn.; 27 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and great great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife; and three sisters; and five brothers.
