HEBRON – Hebron Academy held commencement exercises on May 26, awarding diplomas to 83 graduates, representing 15 states and six countries and provinces. Local students receiving honors in the graduating class included the following:

Sara Powers of Auburn received the Hebron Cup. She also received the Hebron academic excellence awards for history and music. She was a member of the jazz band, orchestra and the girls’ soccer team, captain of the girls’ basketball team and served as a class officer. Powers is the daughter of Will and Susan Powers and will attend Bowdoin College in September.

Katherine Cole of New Gloucester received the Risman Honor Award. She also was the recipient of the Hebron academic excellence awards in English and Spanish. Cole was a four-year class officer, a member of the soccer and softball teams and the first-place snowboarding champion of the Maine Association of Independent School Athletic Directors’ League. She served as lighting director for the all-school musicals and was a member of the jazz band. The daughter of John and Joanne Cole, she will attend Amherst College in Amherst, Mass., in the fall.

Joshua Taylor of Raymond was the recipient of the Phemister Award and the Reed Award. He captained varsity hockey and soccer teams and was a member of the baseball team and a Green Key tour guide. Taylor was selected by residential faculty at Hebron to be a student proctor this year. He is planning to attend Hobart and William Smith Collge in Geneva, N.Y., in the fall. Taylor is the son of Stacey and Lawrence Taylor.

The Bessie Fenn Award was given to Taylor Fey of Raymond. Fey was a four-year member of the girls’ soccer, hockey and lacrosse teams and the community service club. She plays the bagpipes and performed in school special events. Fey plans to attend Oberlin College in Ohio in the fall. She is the daughter of Robert and April Fey.

The Bernat Memorial Award was presented to Victoria Planson of New Gloucester, who will attend Mt. Holyoke in September. Planson starred in the Hebron musical productions of “The Wiz” and “Fiddler on the Roof” and sang in “Working” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” She was a member of the girls’ soccer, alpine ski and lacrosse teams, the chorus and the Green Key tour guides. She is the daughter of Connie Justice and Andrei Planson.

Kelsey Jordan of Gray received the Senior Scholarship Prize and the Lorimer Scholarship Prize. Jordan participated in the all-school musicals during her four years, starring in “Fiddler on the Roof” as Golda, and was a member of the chorus and orchestra. She was a class officer and a member of the Green Key tour guides. Jordan is the daughter of Abby Montague and David Jordan.

Charles Cummings of Norway, who delivered the senior graduation address, received the Regis A. Lepage Scholarship Prize. Cummings was a four-year member of the boys’ soccer, JV hockey and lacrosse teams, a class officer and a Green Key tour guide. He participated in school musicals, with the lead role in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” The son of Cynthia Reedy and Brad Cummings, he will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall.

Undergraduate accomplishments were recognized at the academy’s recent baccalaureate ceremonies:

Silas Leavitt of Gray received the L. Edward Willard Prize and the Compton Prize in Languages. He was also awarded the Harvard Book Award. Leavitt is the son of Anne Gass and Richard Leavitt.

Bess Curtis received the Cum Laude Prize in Geometry. A freshman from Turner, she is the daughter of Deanna Kilbreth and Jon Curtis.

Michael R. Simms of Auburn received the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal. Simms is the son of Marcia Matuska and David Simms.

The Smith Book Award was given to Rosa Van Wie of New Gloucester, daughter of Cheryl Bascomb and David Van Wie.

Brent Landry and Eric Rodriguez received the Charlotte R. Stonebraker Community Scholarship Prizes. Landry is the son of Carol Coy and Keith Landry of Oxford and Rodriguez is the son of Christine and David Rodriguez of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.

For her outstanding work in religion and ethics, Mary Randall received the academic excellence award in that subject. She is the daughter of Elizabethand John Randall of New Gloucester.
