NORWAY – Renovations to the 1930s Little Red Schoolhouse are now focused on replacing the septic system.

“We’re most concerned about the septic system because it’s an old steel tank and it’s so close to the water,” Recreation Department Chairman Debra Partridge said of the former schoolhouse that sits between Lake Pennesseewassee and Route 118.

Townspeople approved $27,500 in June to pay for pumping out, digging out and replacing the steel sewer storage tank, painting the building and replacing boards. Partridge was able to get design work for the septic system completed.

“The next step is to get the code enforcement approval,” she said. That will cost $100 in state-mandated fees.

“We are moving forward. Now that we have the design we’ll know, once we bid out, how much it will cost,” she said.

The one-story school was closed in the 1960s. It’s now used as headquarters for the Norway Trackers Snowmobile Club, the Oxford Hills ATV Club, Norway-Paris Fish and Game Club, the Norway Parks Department swim program and the Norway Lakes Association.

Other work to be done includes repainting the building in its current red shade and replacing some of the wood on the outside walls, which have begun to rot.
