NEW YORK – Melky Cabrera put one into the seats – behind the dugout, that is. Yep, the New York Yankees are doing just fine without any homer help from Alex Rodriguez.

Cabrera hit a bizarre two-run double and Robinson Cano homered, leading Chien-Ming Wang and the Yankees over the Kansas City Royals 7-1 Friday night.

Rodriguez went 1-for-3 and remained at 499 career homers. He hasn’t homered in 28 at-bats since July 25 against Kansas City – New York has scored 49 runs in its last five games anyway.

Orioles 3, Devil Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Daniel Cabrera remained perfect against Tampa Bay and Aubrey Huff hit another homer against his former team in the Baltimore Orioles’ 3-1 win over the Devil Rays on Friday night.

Cabrera (8-11) gave up a run and four hits in seven innings with one walk and three strikeouts, improving to 6-0 in his career against Tampa Bay, 3-0 this year. In his last 14 innings against the Devil Rays, he’s allowed a run and five hits.

Blue Jays 6, Rangers 4

TORONTO – Aaron Hill doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, Roy Halladay struck out nine and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers 6-4 on Friday night for their sixth straight home win.

Toronto is 32-20 at home and has outscored opponents 41-9 during the winning streak. The Blue Jays are 54-54 overall.

With the score 3-3, Vernon Wells singled off Jamey Wright (3-4) leading off the sixth and took third when the reliever fielded Frank Thomas’ comebacker and threw the ball into center field for an error. Hill doubled to left, and Gregg Zaun followed with a two-run single.

DETROIT – Juan Uribe hit his third career grand slam, and Jermaine Dye added a solo shot as the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 7-4 on Friday night.

Josh Fields also homered for the White Sox, who dealt Detroit its third straight loss and ninth in 11 games.

Indians 5, Twins 2

MINNEAPOLIS – Grady Sizemore homered and had four RBIs for the Cleveland Indians, who started an important four-game series against the Minnesota Twins with a 5-2 victory on Friday night.

Importance was a relative term, though, two days after the freeway bridge that collapsed a few blocks away and killed at least five people. A crowd announced at 31,664 came to catch a ballgame and forget about the tragedy for a while.

Athletics 8, Angels 4

OAKLAND, Calif. – Vladimir Guerrero made a costly throwing error that led to a five-run eighth inning, overshadowing his second consecutive two homer game as the Oakland Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-4 on Friday night.

Guerrero hit a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth and added a go-ahead shot in the eighth. But the A’s came back in the eighth to win for the third time in four games.

Mike Piazza singled off Scot Shields (3-4) with one out in the eighth. After Mark Ellis flew out, Marco Scutaro singled down the right-field line.

With pinch-runner J.J. Furmaniak seeming to round third, Guerrero hesitated between throwing to third and home. He double clutched and threw home, but short-hopped cutoff man Robb Quinlan. The ball bounced loose up the third-base line, allowing Furmaniak to score and Scutaro to reach second. Dan Johnson followed with a double, snapping an 0-for-17 streak, to score the go-ahead run.
