• One of the happiest boys in Lewiston or Auburn on Saturday was Wallace McKennon, 13 James street, Auburn, who won the $12.50 Hot Tamale Coaster that was given to the boy whose coupons showed the largest amount of enamel sold during this contest at the Great Department Store. This coaster has been on exhibition in their Chapel street window and has been the envy of every boy in the two cities.
• Believing that a gang of crooks are in the vicinity of Lewiston the police wish everybody to take especial precautions to keep their houses closed. Monday night four houses were entered and money and articles of value taken. City Marshal Cailler put men on the cases as soon as they were reported but nothing has been learned as yet.

WASHINGTON – The Navy today announced it will deactivate 60 ships, including major warships from the Atlantic and Pacific fleets within the next five months. During the same period that the older ships are being laid up, the Navy has scheduled the addition of 23 new vessels and 10 ships that are under conversion to operate modern weapons and to meet modern tests.
BANGOR – Ted Williams, master slugger of the Boston Red Sox, whirled through the Bangor area today, collecting checks galore for the Jimmy Fund, one of his pet projects.

• The maturing of the baby-boom generation will push the U.S. voting-age population to a record 169 million for this fall’s election, the Census Bureau projected Tuesday. Five million more people will be old enough to vote this year than were eligible in 1980, the last federal election, although actual turnout is likely to be lower since voters won’t be electing a president, the bureau said.
AUGUSTA – Elderly Maine homeowners could receive monthly checks for the equity in their homes, while continuing to live in them if the federal government agrees to fund a proposed $195,000 pilot program, says the head of the Bureau of Maine’s Elderly.
