PORTLAND (AP) – A Yarmouth woman is free on bail after being charged with stealing $300,000 from a Freeport natural foods store.

Rebecca McGilp, 45, entered no plea when she made a court appearance to face theft charges Monday. She is free on $15,000 bail.

Police charge that McGilp wrote dozens of business checks to herself and deposited them in her own account while working as bookkeeper for Royal River Natural Foods during a two-year period that ended in June. She then allegedly altered the books to make the payments seem legitimate.

McGilp’s lawyer, Peter Rodway, said she has no criminal record, but declined to comment on the case. A lawsuit filed by the food store seeks to recover the lost money.
