Dear Sun Spots: We need lots of locks! Hair, that is.

On behalf of Advocates for Children, I am organizing a “Cuts for Kids” fundraiser. The event will be held Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are asking local hair salons to help by offering basic haircuts to adults and children for a $10 donation to Advocates for Children. We hope to ultimately have eight to 10 locations. This is a great way to get an affordable haircut while helping the agency offer programs to families in Androscoggin County. If your salon would like to help, please call Michael Renee Hanson at Taboo Hair Design, 783-0139, for more details. To find out where to get your haircuts, please refer to the special events page at www.advocatesforchildren.net. – Ruth DeCoster, Advocates for Children, Auburn.

Dear Sun Spots: Would anyone know of any club or organization that plays mah jongg here in Lewiston, Auburn or the Oxford areas? I may be reached at 583-4638 and am ready to play mah jongg. – Yvette Thompson, No Town.

Answer:
Sun Spots corresponded with Domenica Cipollone at the University of Southern Maine’s Office of International Exchange and National Student Exchange, who is delighted to see interest growing in this game. Many thanks to her for all her information.

Cipollone has taught mah jongg at USM’s Center for Continuing Education. While she will not be teaching this fall, she expects to teach this class during the winter/spring semester.

She notes that she usually focuses on the Asian form of play, not the National Mah Jongg League form using the ‘card,’ which is the form more familiar to those in the U.S. She says the Asian form is easier to learn, she believes, and prepares people for moving to the card with willing partners. mah jongg is both stimulating and exotic, allows people to connect over lovely game pieces, and over time. Contact The Center for Continuing Education through their Web site at www.usm.maine.edu/cce/ or by phone at 780-5900, 800-787-0468.

Dear Sun Spots: Recently I renewed my AT&T/Sam’s Club calling card. Long and short of it is I need to contact them to get a refund? Thank you. – No Name, No Town.

Answer:
Consider trying to contact AT&T PrePaid Phone Cards at 1-800-364-9292. In the meantime, the telephone number for the Global Prepaid Card Customer Care Center is 1-800-569-2018. Perhaps either of these will assist you to discuss your needs.

Dear Sun Spots: I would like to know if any readers would have information concerning a card show that was held at the former Central Maine Youth Center in the mid- to late 1980s. The show featured hockey legends Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, and Maurice “Rocket” Richard. I would especially be interested in the date that this event was held. Thanks! – Gene Berube, Lisbon.

Dear Sun Spots: In the Aug. 7 column, a woman asked about Taste of Home Cooking School coming to the local area. It is not local for her but may be for some. They will be in Windham on Oct. 9 and Aug. 16 is the first date you can contact them about tickets for this two-hour showcase. They may be reached at 414-423-5454. You will need to use code 04901. You can also sign up online at tasteofhomeschools.com, again not until Aug. 16. Hope this helps. – Loreda in South Paris.

Dear Sun Spots: Is there any new information for the Sun Spots item on the Autumn’s Day Spa? More specifically, I like to know when they are planning to open for business because I have left numerous voice messages to call me back, and I have still not heard back from them. I would like to use my gift certificate from Atlantis Day Spa ASAP. Thank you for any updates. – Pam, Lewiston.

Answer: They are open, and Sun Spots is unsure which number you were calling and leaving a message on. She has spoken with the owner, who says they are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They may be reached at 782-0077.
