LEWISTON – Lewiston police charged a man with 22 counts of burglary Thursday, ending what they say was a weeklong crime spree that spanned 22 homes on 14 streets.
Joseph Garland, 34, is due in court today to answer 10 previous burglary charges.
He was arrested Thursday morning on Pierce Street. Police said they received information that Garland was behind the burglaries and would be hanging out in the area. Plainclothes officers spotted him just before noon and arrested him on two warrants for violating bail and theft.
He was carrying credit cards and jewelry from the recent burglaries, according to police. Sgt. Dave St. Pierre said Garland ultimately confessed and pointed out the homes he’d broken into.
Garland, who has a history of arrests for burglary and theft, was staying at a halfway house. On Aug. 1, police said, he walked away from that house without permission and on Aug. 2 began breaking into Lewiston homes.
All of the break-ins were done during the day while no one was home. Police said Garland stole money, TVs, credit cards, jewelry and electronics, with plans to sell what he could. Police are working to find the items.
The homes were on 14 streets, including Oak, Howe, Shawmut, Orange, Jefferson, Dill and Davis.
