LISBON – An elderly Lisbon Falls woman, Gloria Wheeler, escaped apparent injury late Friday night when an out-of-control car careened across Main Street into her front yard and through the brick foundation of her home.
The 1988 Honda Accord, which was totaled, came to a stop with the front half wedged inside the cellar, amid spraying water from broken water pipes and live wires dangling from the electrical entrance, Officer Ryan McGee said.
The driver, identified as Jason Holbrook, 27, of Lisbon Falls, fled the scene on foot before police arrived. He was later apprehended by Officer Richard St. Amant and the department canine, Dex, in the Dumas Street area.
Holbrook, who suffered apparent minor injuries, was transported to a Lewiston hospital, where he was treated and released, police said. He was arrested by St. Amant on a charge of operating under the influence.
The incident remained under investigation on Saturday.
According to McGee, Holbrook was driving north on Main Street when his vehicle went off the left shoulder, hit a tree, crossed Wheeler’s yard and struck the single-family wood-frame home at 132 Main St.
Cental Maine Power was called to the scene to disconnect power, and the Lisbon Water Department responded to close the water main in front of the home.
A neighbor, Mrs. Robert Harris, who reported the 11:55 p.m. accident, said she heard an “amazingly unbelievable screeching of tires,” prior to the crash.
In spite of the damage to her home, Ms. Wheeler remained there for the rest of the night.
The extent of the structural damage to the home has yet to be determined.
