PARIS – A 60-year-old man was killed Tuesday night when his truck was hit by a freight train at a crossing near his home, police Lt. Michael Dailey said.
Edward Kilgore, 60, of 34 Hathaway Road was pronounced dead at the Hathaway Road crossing soon after the 7:52 p.m. accident, the officer said. Kilgore was trapped in his black Ford Ranger.
The crossing is marked by white-crossed signs and a stop sign, but there are no flashing lights or bells.
Dailey said Kilgore would have been familiar with the crossing, since he went to and from his home several times a day.
A St. Lawrence & Atlantic freight train with four locomotives towing empty cars was proceeding north when it struck Kilgore’s truck on the driver’s side, Dailey said. The train’s warning system consisting of a whistle that is usually blown 20 seconds before reaching the crossing was operating at the time, he said. The train usually travels 15 mph at such crossings, he said.
Paris and Norway police officers, Paris firefighters and PACE ambulance personnel rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area. Family members and others congregated near the scene, which is next to the Paris Elementary School off High Street.
Dailey said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
