HARRISON – Brian Cox hurled 5 solid innings of relief and Mark Hreben and Wes Smith provided the offensive spark as West Paris cooled off the Great Falls Outlaws 4-3 in the Central Maine Senior Men’s Baseball League.

Cox allowed just 5 hits and 1 run in relief of starter Mike Godin. Hreben banged 2 hits and scored the game-winning run. Smith crushed a 2-run homer to left center.

The Outlaws took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI hits by Dave Coburn and Chris Reed. Smith’s homer came in the 5th to tie the score.

Great Falls regained the lead in the 6th. Val Beaudet scored on a hit by Scott Berube. The Westies again tied the game in the 6th on a Hreben single.

After a scorelesss 7th, the Outlaws started a rally in the 8th that ended with a wild triple play. With 2 on and no outs, Rod Bates popped up a sacrifice bunt that was determined to be caught by the pitcher. In the ensuing confusion, both runners were caught off base.

In the last of the 9th, Hreben doubled. After a dropped popup that put runners on second and third, the Outlaws walked the bases full. Godin’s fly ball to right fieldfell just inside the foul line and the game was over.

Greg Massey was the tough-luck loser in a complete game effort. Coburn, Reed, Berube, Beaudet and Bates were all repeat hitters.
