Dear Sun Spots: We were having a discussion about presidents, and I mentioned that former President George and Barbara Bush lived in Lewiston, on Oak Street, in their younger days. Not one person agreed with me.

Please confirm this for me so I can tape it on my refrigerator for everyone to see. – No Name, Sabattus.

Answer:
You are correct that the Bushes lived in Lewiston at one time.

According to an October 2000 article by reporter Dan Hartill, who interviewed Bush who was campaigning at the time for his son, George and Barbara were married in 1945. Bush was stationed in Lewiston flying torpedo bombers for the Navy. The newlyweds lived for a short time in an Auburn apartment and it was while living there that they heard Franklin Roosevelt had died. Months later the couple left. George W. Bush was born in July of the following year.

However, a special sections publication published on Jan. 21, 2007, notes the Bushes lived in Lewiston in 1945 during George Bush’s flight training.

Sun Spots also located a posting at books.google.com which notes the following excerpt from Barbara Bush: A Memoir:

We were moved to a base in Maine and lived in several rooms in the Lewiston-Auburn area. George’s mother came to see us and told my mother we lived in the red light district. Rooms were hard to find in base towns. We had a small, one-room efficiency apartment with a kitchen in the closet and a Murphy-in-the-door bed. It smelled of other people’s cooking, and there was really very little to keep me busy all day. So I wandered the streets and read a lot. I’ll never forget the day George came home early because Franklin Roosevelt had died. We were sick.

Dear Sun Spots: We have Samsung a 47-inch rear projection television that needs some repair. The picture looks like a 3D image without the 3D glasses. Is there anyone in a 100-mile radius that works on these or anyone who does home repairs? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I may be reached at 897-5091. – Jean Tardiff, No Town.

Dear Sun Spots: Love your column! I read it every day and am hoping you can help me.

I have a treadmill that worked for about three months. The belt started slipping and my husband tried to fix it but it still does it. It has been sitting for a year, and I cannot use it because I do not know anyone who might be able to fix it. I hope you can help. Please do not use my name. – No Name, Lisbon Falls.

Dear Sun Spots: I am looking for yarn someone might have left from a project. It is Caron Wintuk called Evening Jewels Ombrel 3526. The dye lot wouldn’t matter as it is for an afghan and the colors would blend. I am willing to pay a reasonable price plus postage or if it is near enough could pick it up. I may be reached by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone 562-7305. Thanks so much. C. Beedy, No Town.
