OGUNQUIT – The musical Broadway smash “Hairspray” will be staged Aug. 28 to Sept. 15 at the Ogunquit Playhouse. Featured will be TV and film star Eddie Mekka in the role of Wilbur Turnblad and Ryan Landry as Edna Turnblad.
Mekka, who was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in “The Lieutenant,” is probably best known as Carmine Ragusa, “The Big Ragu” in the hit TV comedy series “Laverne & Shirley,” broadcast on ABC from January 1976 through May 1983.
Landry, Boston Celebrity of the Year (2006), left audiences laughing out loud with his portrayal of the wicked stepmother in last season’s sentimental favorite, “Cinderella,” with Leslie Uggams.
Set in Baltimore in the early 1960s, “Hairspray” revolves around Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, who has only one passion – to dance.
Donna Drake, who appeared in the original cast of “A Chorus Line on Broadway,” will make her debut at the Playhouse as director/choreographer.
Shows will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, with weekday matinees Wednesday and Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Ogunquit Playhouse box office at 646-5511, or by visiting the Web site at www.ogunquitplayhouse.org.
