WILTON – A group of local mothers will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Blessed Baby Boutique, 346 Main St., for an introductory meeting to create a Mothers’ Center in Franklin County.
While new to the community, Mothers’ Centers have been forming around the country since 1975. The center is a place for women to meet, build connections and learn from each other in an empathic environment.
The National Association of Mothers’ Centers provides technical assistance, resource materials and support services to help centers develop and sustain themselves. There are currently more than 50 sites as part of the national network.
Heidi MacIsaac first heard about Mothers’ Centers when a friend, Dawnella Sutton, a doula and birth worker of Mothers Moon, told her about it.
“After the birth of my second child, I realized that it was difficult to connect with other mothers between work, family and time constraints. I found a community of support in the Wilton Work-At-Home-Mom Co-op, but really want to expand that to offer it to the rest of the community. When Dawnella told me about Mothers’ Centers, I knew that was what we are missing.”
Karen Kidder, mother of Skyler, 4, and Talia, 2, agrees. The women and the co-op have been talking with other mothers about the concept of bringing a Mothers’ Center to town and have received a positive response.
All interested mothers are invited to attend the meeting where a video will be shown about the center and discussion will follow. Light refreshments will be served, and in-arms infants are welcome.
The women ask all to RSVP by Saturday, Sept. 1. For additional information, call MacIsaac at 645-4666 or 778-1065 or e-mail [email protected].
