AUGUSTA (AP) – Democrats nominated a former legislator, Sharon Libby Jones of Greenville, as their candidate to fill a Maine House of Representatives seat left open by the recent death of Rep. Earl Richardson.

Jones was nominated Monday night by local Democratic committee members. District 27 Republicans were to hold a special caucus to choose a nominee Tuesday, and a special election will be held on Election Day Nov. 6.

Jones and her husband run a snow plowing and seasonal services business in Greenville. She was elected to two-year House terms in 1996 and 2000, and is a former executive director of the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce.

In House District 93, a special election will also be held Nov. 6 to fill a House seat vacated by the resignation of Republican Randy Hotham of Dixfield.

Democrats nominated Sheryl Briggs of Mexico and Republicans have scheduled a nomination caucus for Wednesday.
