University of Southern Maine students have been awarded scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year: The University of Southern Maine serves some 10,500 students with campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston-Auburn. Local students receiving awards were:
Auburn: Theresa L. Arita, a graduate student in school counseling, has been awarded a USM College of Education and Human Development Clinical Fellows Scholarship.
Tyler Sperry, a business administration major, was awarded the USM – Portland Ballet Scholarship, the Duane Wood Scholarship and the USM General Achievement Scholarship. Sperry is a 1999 graduate of Edward Little High School and is the son of Mitch and Carlene Sperry of Auburn.
Bridgton: Karen Elise Knox, a graduate student in literacy, was awarded the Margaret McKenna Memorial Scholarship. She is the daughter of Claire and Jim Knox of Bridgton.
Brunswick: Tamara P. Watson, a Lewiston-Auburn College social and behavioral sciences major, was awarded the Stewart Belknap Hamblen 1924 Scholarship. Watson resides with her husband, David Watson, in Brunswick and is the daughter of Maureen Perkins of Freeport.
Dixfield: Debra Bea Shurtleff, a Lewiston-Auburn College natural and applied sciences major, was awarded the Androscoggin Bank Scholarship. Shurtleff graduated from Dirigo High School in 1992 and is the daughter of Arthur and Darlene Porter of Peru. Shurtleff and her spouse, Wil, reside in Dixfield.
Embden: Ashley Michelle Carey, an accounting major, was awarded the Burchard A. Dunn Memorial Scholarship, the George D. Woodward Accounting Scholarship, the Anson Academy Scholarship, the TD BankNorth Scholarship and a Merit Scholarship. Carey is a 2006 graduate of Carrabec High School and is the daughter of David and Sharon Carey.
Farmington: Amy Belanger, an athletic training major, was awarded the Department of Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences Scholarship. Belanger is a 2005 graduate of Mt. Blue High School and attended Merrimack College. She is the daughter of Andre Belanger of Farmington and Dorie Belanger of Westbrook.
Hartford: Patricia Malone, a Lewiston-Auburn College humanities and social behavorial sciences major, was awarded the Literary Achievement Award. She resides in Hartford with her husband, Peter Morse.
Lewiston: Katherine A. LaMore, a graduate student in social work, was awarded the Lunder Scholarship and a USM General Achievement Scholarship. LaMore earned an associate’s in social services from the University of Maine in Augusta in 2003 and a bachelor’s in social work from the University of Southern Maine in 2006. She resides in Lewiston with her husband, Stephen LaMore.
Mechanic Falls: Bonnie M. Robbins, a graduate student in school counseling, was awarded a USM College of Education and Human Development Clinical Fellows Scholarship. Robbins is a 1989 graduate of Hingham High School, Hingham, Mass. Robbins is the daughter of Marc and Elaine Lasky of Poland and Joan Reynolds of Newton, Mass.
Minot: Mike Nelson, a double major in mechanical engineering and computer science, was awarded the Masi Magnetic Research Scholarship. Nelson is a 2005 graduate of Calvary Christian Academy. He is the son of Chris and Alison Nelson of Minot.
Naples: Vijayarani Suresh, a graduate student in the nurse practitioner program, was awarded the Anthem Scholarship. Suresh resides with her husband, Abraham Suresh, in Naples.
Old Orchard Beach: Larry White Jr., a computer science major, was awarded the Governor’s Scholarship. A 1992 graduate of Livermore Falls High School, he is son of Larry White Sr. and Janice White of Jay.
Poland: Jenna D. Nelson, a music education major, was awarded a Joan Martin Beaudry Scholarship. Nelson is a 2006 graduate of Edward Little High School.
Portland: Justin Levesque, a master’s in applied science and master’s in business administration student, was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Award for the Masters in Manufacturing Systems Program. Levesque is a 2004 graduate of Bates College, Lewiston. He is the son of Lionel and Geri Levesque of Portland.
Rockland: Gretchen M. Schmitt, a Lewiston-Auburn College leadership and organizational studies major, was awarded the Society for Human Resources Management Scholarship. A 2002 graduate of Rockland District High School, she is the daughter of John and Cherly Schmitt of Rockland.
Topsham: James R. Morris III of Topsham, a computer science major, was awarded the Governor’s Computer Science Scholarship and the Presidential Dirigo Scholarship. Morris is a 2006 graduate of Mt. Ararat High School. He is the son of Jeffrey and Wanda Morris of Topsham.
