LEWISTON – George L. Poirier, 86, of 1 Fisher Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 30, at Ste. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion, after a four-day stay.

He was born in St. Jean Baptiste, P.Q., Canada, July 4, 1921. He was educated in Lewiston schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was married to the former Irene A. Langlois June 7, 1947, who died on Sept. 13, 1998, and together they enjoyed and celebrated 51 years of marriage. He worked at the Libbey Mill for three years, and then owned and operated Poirier’s Dairy for more than 23 years, until retiring in 1976.

He was a member of the Holy Family Parish, a member of the St. Joseph’s Association, a member of the Holy Family Bowling and Golfing League’s for 34 years and a member of the American Legion, Post 22, Lewiston.

He dedicated his life to his three children, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed many pastimes, including bowling, playing cards, golfing, woodworking and being among his family and friends. He will be remembered and loved for his smile, kindness and gentle heart.

He is survived by a daughter, Therese L. Lefebvre, and her husband, Larry, of Lewiston; two sons, Bertrand J., and his wife, Donna Poirier, of Greene and Roland L., and his wife, Diane Poirier, of Lewiston; nine grandchildren, Paul and Julie Lefebvre, Karen and Michael Gardner, Michelle and Jason Davis, Cynthia and John Powers, Matthew Poirier, Anthony and Marie Poirier, Kristina and Christopher Bouchard, Ryan Poirier and Nicole Poirier; eight great-grandchildren, Laura and Lucas Lefebvre, Allison, Matthew, Eve Gardner, Tyler and Gage Davis and Jackson Poirier; and four sisters, Marie Rose Beaudoin, Cecile Rodrigue and Catherine (Yvette) Bergeron, all of Lewiston and Lena Lapointe, and her husband, Armand, of Old Orchard Beach.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Diana Begin and Anita Houle; and his brothers, Ernest, Joseph and Lionel Poirier.
