FARMINGTON – A man accused of stealing three guns from Wal-Mart pleaded guilty to a charge of theft and cultivating marijuana Tuesday.
Cory J. Bellefeuille, 26, of Farmington told Justice Joseph Jabar that it was a stupid mistake on his part. He said he had no record previously and was on medication at the time.
A plea agreement was continued to Sept. 24. The proposed agreement calls for up to six months in jail, two years probation and a $400 fine for the cultivation of marijuana. Eighteen months of jail time is suspended. A cap on the six months, Jabar said, meant that Bellefeuille’s attorney could argue for less time.
Bellefeuille was accused of taking a shotgun and two rifles during three visits to Wal-Mart on Dec. 24, sometime around New Year’s Day and Jan. 21.
A key to the store’s gun cabinet had been stolen previously, and the key was used to open the locked case to get the guns, Farmington police Detective Marc Bowering reported early in February. Wal-Mart representatives changed the locks to the cabinet after they realized the key was missing, but the old key fit the new case, Bowering said.
After watching store security surveillance tapes, police obtained a search warrant for Bellefeuille’s residence in early February where pot plants were found in the basement.
According to an affidavit Bowering filed with the court, Bellefeuille produced the three stolen guns from Wal-Mart and admitted to stealing them.
Jabar asked Bellefeuille how he managed to get through the entrance of Wal-Mart with the guns.
Bellefeuille said no one checked or said anything; he was able to walk out the door each time.
Bellefeuille was arrested in May on charges of theft and violation of condition of release when employees of Olympia Sports reported seeing him steal a pair of sneakers from the store. He was accused of putting on new sneakers in the store and replacing them with his old sneakers in the box.
After employees called police to report the theft while Bellefeuille was still in the store, police waited in the parking lot until Bellefeuille stepped off the curb into the parking lot outside the store.
