WILTON – Selectmen learned Tuesday of a statewide effort to repeal the school consolidation law.

Town Manager Peter Nielsen said Wednesday that he shared a letter and questionnaire with the board from a co-chair of the Deer Isle-Stonington CSD 13 School Committee, Lawrence Greenlaw.

Greenlaw has sent letters to all Maine school districts and to elected officials of Maine cities and towns seeking advice on the desirability of initiating a citizen’s referendum to repeal the school consolidation law.

He did not ask the board to take a vote at this time but was interested in knowing how many elected municipal and school officials, parents and Maine citizens would support the undertaking, as he wrote in his letter.

The board chose to not take action on the matter, Nielsen said, but did discuss the opportunity for selectmen to respond individually.

In other matters, Code Enforcement Officer Paul Montague discussed three buildings that appear to be unsafe with the board.

He asked the board for support to gain compliance through enforcement action.

The three buildings involved include an abandoned structure on Temple Road, the former Forster Manufacturing building on Depot Street and a partially collapsed building on the corner of Depot and Union streets, located across from the Laundromat.

Following the discussion, the board authorized Montague to contact the owners regarding the building safety violations.

Preparations for paving have been completed on Terrace Drive, Smith Road, Pleasant Street, Prospect Street, Pond Road and the entrance to Kineowatha Park as was reported by John Welch in the quarterly Highway Department report.

Paving awaits the results of the bidding process, he reported. Welch had sent out paving bids to six contractors and loader bids to seven equipment dealers for the new bucket loader. The bids were opened Tuesday evening by the board that voted to have the town manager and Welch review them and make a recommendation at their next meeting.
