BOSTON (AP) – The ringing of a fire bell marked a solemn end to a funeral service Thursday for one of two Boston firefighters killed in a restaurant blaze last week.

Hundreds of firefighters from across the country and abroad joined dignitaries including Gov. Deval Patrick, Sen. John Kerry, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Cardinal Sean O’Malley to honor Paul Cahill, 55, of Scituate at a funeral Mass.

He and fellow firefighter Warren Payne, 53, of Canton were killed Aug. 30.

Relatives, friends and colleagues eulogized Cahill as a passionate firefighter, caring friend, great cook – and a loving husband and father.

Two colleagues presented Cahill’s firefighting helmet and uniform hat to his wife and mother. The family also was to be presented with the International Association of Firefighters Medal of Honor.

Bagpipers played a mournful tune, drummers clad in Scottish kilts walked behind, firefighters saluted and mourners looked on as a firetruck carrying the flag-drapped casket bearing Cahill’s remains left the Holy Name Church in West Roxbury – its emergency lights flashing and eight pallbearers walking alongside it.

Two fire trucks hoisted a giant American flag between their raised ladders across the road for the funeral procession to pass beneath.

Services for Payne were scheduled for Friday.
