I have a concern about the legal residence of Lewiston City Councilman Stavros Mendros. As an elected city official, he is supposed to reside in the ward he represents, Ward 1. I believe that Mendros does not.

He claims his residence is 110 Holland St., which is in Ward 1, but according to an article in the Sept. 2 Sun Journal, he receives his mail at 135 Hogan Road, which is in Ward 2. His driver’s license is also addressed 135 Hogan Road, and the telephone directory lists his address as Hogan Road.

It seems to me that where you get your mail, phone calls and what you have as an address on your driver’s license should be your legal address. In his case, it is not.

In the Sun Journal article, Mendros even mentions that it is difficult to sort out all the various addresses: “I have a hard time keeping track of it.”

I disagree. I believe it is a simple manipulation of election law, and it is wrong. Elected officials should represent the ward they live in, and not manipulate the election system to their advantage just because they can.

People in Ward 1 should elect a city councilor from Ward 1.
