OTISFIELD – The Otisfield Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Otisfield Town Office.
After a brief business meeting, the program will be turned over to Richard Merk, who will present what he has learned about the family and life of Forrest Edwards, Otisfield’s famous apple grower, who died in 1954.
Merk owns and lives on some of the 1,500 acres in the south part of Otisfield that Edwards cultivated during the first half of the 20th century.
Recently Merk commented that much of what he knows about his predecessor comes from the many individuals who have stopped by to explain that they once worked at the orchard.
Some of the stories he has collected show Edwards as a strong and tireless worker who, in winter, routinely drove his ox team across Thompson Lake, transporting his apples to the freight depot in Poland, Merk said.
All are welcome. A special invitation goes to those who can bring with them their own memories of Forrest Edwards. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.
