Three Maine women bikers on a charity run to New York City to raise money for foster kids and meet Oprah got their motorcycles stolen from a Maspeth, N.Y., Comfort Inn parking lot the first night of their trip.
And meeting Oprah? Monday afternoon that looked wait-and-see, too.
Linda Wagner of Lewiston, one of the organizers, said 24 bikers took off from the Kittery Trading Post on Sunday morning with “Survivor” stars Big Tom Buchanan and Stephenie LaGrossa riding along to lend their celebrity. The cause: the Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine.
With lots of preride publicity and hustle, Wagner said the women had raised, in early estimates, at least $70,000. According to one of the run’s Web sites, makthpn.com, shorthand for Make It Happen, several riders live in Lisbon, North Monmouth and Lewiston. The funds are meant for things like clothing and art supplies.
Stashed on one of the stolen bikes: checks made out to the AFFM charity.
“The security cameras show a car pulling up, a guy getting out, hot wiring the bikes, more people getting out and driving off with the bikes,” Wagner said by phone from New York.
Two of the women with stolen motorcycles had planned to break off from the trek and head to Virginia. Help is on the way today, she said.
L-A Harley-Davidson will trailer out two bikes Tuesday for the women to finish their trip.
The third woman caught a ride back home already. “She was very upset,” Wagner said.
Early Monday afternoon, plans for the rest of the day included a police escort to their next hotel in New Jersey and time with Oprah in Madison Square Garden. They’d had escorts already on different legs of the trip and attracted quite a bit of attention with lead and chase vehicles and so many bikes in-between.
“That’s the plan – a lot has changed on this trip,” she said.
