JAY – A horse died Monday after it got loose from its tether on Maxwell Road in North Jay and collided with a loaded tractor-trailer on Route 4, police officer Russell Adams said.

Scott Bowen, 29, of Jay was southbound on the highway just south of the intersection of Route 2 near the Wilton town line when the horse came running from the Rolling Ridge area and into the driver’s side of the tractor, Adams said.

The horse was dead at the scene, he said. Its owner, Daniel Heath, 49, of Jay donated the remains to the DEW Animal Kingdom in Mount Vernon.

Adams and Animal Control Officer Larry Wright responded to the scene after the 2:05 p.m. call.

Adams estimated the impact caused $1,500 in damage to Bowen’s tractor. The rig was loaded with tree-length pulp and headed for Paris, Adams said.
