LEWISTON – A special library orientation session for teens will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library.
“We’re inviting all Lewiston teens between 13 and 19 to come in, check out the Teen Room, hear about what the library has to offer, and take part in a discussion about how we can team up to make the Teen Room a great place for kids,” said Ellen Gilliam, the library’s deputy director and reference librarian.
She said, “We look forward to this opportunity to have an upbeat, proactive conversation with our teen patrons about making LPL a hospitable place for them and their peers to relax, study, surf the Web and learn about the world around them.”
Attendees at Saturday’s orientation will hear about LPL resources and services available to them as well as participate in a two-way discussion of behavior norms and expectations.
To sweeten the message and encourage attendance, all participating teens will have their names entered in a drawing to win a new third generation iPod Nano and other prizes. Those who bring their parents with them to the session will also be awarded bonus time on the Internet.
The LPL Teen Room has become a place for youth to congregate after school and on weekends and evenings.
“The large numbers of young adults using the library for Internet access, casual studying and socializing has led us to investigate how best to serve this lively, exuberant population while still maintaining an environment conducive to quiet study, reading and computer use on the part of other library patrons,” Gilliam said.
Refreshments will be served. More information is available by contacting the LPL Reference Desk at 784-0135, ext. 210.
