LEWISTON – A community-based approach to domestic violence is the central theme of a conference being hosted by the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project on Oct. 16.
“Domestic Violence: A Coordinated Community Response” will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ramada Inn. The registration deadline is Oct. 5.
The conference, held in conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, will highlight the need for cooperation within the community to best serve victims of domestic violence. The day is designed to bring together social service providers, law enforcement, community organizations, educators, mental health providers and others working toward a safer community.
Workshops will be offered throughout the day on topics such as “Cultural and Linguistic Competency,” “Stalking and Domestic Violence: What Every Workplace Needs to Know,” and “Navigating the Courts: Domestic Violence and the Legal System.”
Jane Root, domestic violence coordinator for the Houlton Band of Maliseets, will provide the keynote address.
In Maine, incidents of domestic assault are reported every 96 minutes. AWAP provides a 24-hour help line, emergency shelter, transitional and children’s services, support groups, education and outreach, and judicial advocacy.
