PORTLAND – The Maine Marketing Association will offer insights on marketing makeovers and branding at its next meeting from 8:30 to noon Monday, Oct. 22, at the University of Southern Maine Glickman Library, 7th floor.

Participants will learn how local companies are undergoing transformations in their struggle to dominate their market niches, and hear from a seasoned business broker about the stakes involved.

The topics will be:

Marketing Makeover: New England Protective Coatings. Presenter will be Yana Farrally-Plourde, president of Ateso (www.ateso.com) in Portland. She has had a 20-year marketing and product-development career in New York, Vermont, San Francisco and Los Angeles for companies like Burton Snowboards, ESPN and Sega Videogames. Learn how one local business is transforming a generic commodity business into a brand with real personality.

Market Makeover: Catch a Piece of Maine. Presenter will be Carol Meerschaert, marketing director for Catch a Piece of Maine (www.catchapieceofmaine.com) and Web site coordinator for Maine Marketing Association.

How do you make a splash in the seafood market? Identify an underserved customer base, develop a new service proposition and put out the right marketing bait to lure customers.

Branding for Branders: how to build value for your professional service firm. Presenter will be Glen J. Cooper, CBI, CBA, BVAL and president and co-owner of Maine Business Brokers (www.MaineBusinessBrokers.com) and vice president of New Hampshire Business Sales. With nearly three decades of experience in business brokerage, M&A, and commercial real-estate transactions, Cooper is an author and frequent speaker on the factors that determine the value of a business.

Physician heal thyself: Why marketing firms don’t follow their own advice and what to do about it. Value-building principles for every marketing professional, whether a sole practitioner or a 100 employee agency.
