LOVELL – The high-energy Dave Rowe Trio will bring its Down East music, wit and stories to the Brick Church for the Performing Arts Saturday, Sept. 22.

The three musicians perform authentic Maine music, driven by lyrical fiddle melodies and hearty three-part harmonies that sound as rugged as the coast they sing about.

The band started soon after Dave Rowe’s father died in 2004. Tom Rowe was a founding member of the revered folk group Schooner Fare and was also Dave’s band mate in the roots band Turkey Hollow.

Needing some uplifting and a new direction, Dave, who sings and plays acoustic guitar tin whistle and piano, asked Kevin O’Reilly and Ed Howe to join him to become the Dave Rowe Trio. Howe plays fiddle and provides vocals. O’Reilly also sings and plays electric bass guitar.

They held their first rehearsal on St. Patrick’s Day in 2004, in front of a live audience. Then they were off, performing across the country and recording five critically acclaimed CDs in three years. They have performed on stage with Christine Lavin, Gordon Bok and Tom Paxton.

A seasoned performer, Rowe began playing at age 15 with the Makem Brothers. Since then, he has toured both solo and with several well-known groups. Howe started to play the fiddle at age 4, performed bluegrass shows all over Maine with the Howe family band and later became the driving force behind the band Wake the Neighbors. O’Reilly spent his formative years in local Maine rock bands, became a high-school guidance counselor and played informally at jam sessions and gigs until Rowe heard him play. Two weeks later, Rowe invited him to be the third musician in the Dave Rowe Trio.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Donation at the door: $15, with half going toward restoration and repair of the Brick Church. For more information, call 925-2792.
