LEWISTON – The Lewiston Middle School football team overcame a sluggish start, scoring 20 unanswered points, in defeating Oxford Hills 20-6 in a season opener in the Western Maine Seventh-Eighth Grade Football League.

Jeff Turcotte’s 2 touchdowns proved decisive, and defensive tackle Aaron Crenshaw iced the game with a 45-yard interception return for a TD. A 2-point conversion pass from Chris Madden to Hector Rosario completed the scoring.

The Blue Demons controlled the line of scrimmage in the second half with tough running by fullback Joe McKinnon and some nifty runs by Matt Therrien. Defensively, the Demons were led by linebacker Matt Bowen and cornerback Luke Cote.

Lewiston plays at Gardiner on Thursday.

In the JV game, Oxford Hills prevailed 22-12 on a pair of late scores. Lewiston was led by the halfback tandem of Matt Melanson and Colton Bernier, and fullback Brandon Rac.

In another league opener, AYS of Jay-Livermore edged the Auburn Recs 20-16.
