Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space, was inspired to try out for NASA by Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed communications officer Uhura on the original “Star Trek.” In tribute to Nichols, Dr. Jemison began each of the work shifts on her 1990 shuttle flight with the words “hailing frequencies open.”
