BRIDGTON – The Loon Echo Land Trust, a conservation organization serving seven towns, will host its seventh annual trek Saturday.
“It’s definitely our only major fundraiser of the year,” said Carrie Walia, stewardship coordinator with the trust.
This marks the first year that the event will feature the 6.2-mile hiking option. Hikers will ascend the southwestern ridge trails of Pleasant Mountain and descend down the Shawnee Peak ski slopes. The mountain will be open to non-trek hikers during the event as well.
Walia said the trust manages the trails on the mountain and has 1,500 acres of it under protection. The hiking portion of the event is designed to showcase that effort.
The trek will also feature its traditional bike outings of 25, 50 and 100 miles. The century ride begins at Shawnee Peak, loops north through Bethel, and returns through the White Mountain National Forest. The shorter rides go in the opposite direction for a certain distance before returning.
Six rest stops are placed along the century route. Two of the stops mark turnaround points for the shorter rides. A rest stop will also be available for hikers at the summit of Pleasant Mountain.
Walia said the event will be carbon-neutral thanks to the watt donations from the wind turbines of Maine Interfaith Power and Light. The donations go toward energy use by vehicles in the event.
“Everything was calculated and offset with wind power,” Walia said.
Preregistration has ended, but bikers may still register at the event for $75 and hikers for $65. The cost includes a barbecue meal, rest stops, and emergency and other support. Registration takes place at Shawnee Peak.
The century ride departs at 8 a.m., while the 25- and 50-mile rides leave at 10 a.m. Hikers will be shuttled from Shawnee Peak to the Pleasant Mountain trailhead between 8:15 and 10:15 a.m.
Emergency support will be provided by United Ambulance, the Yankee Amateur Radio Club, and the Oxford County Amateur Radio Emergency Service.
Participants who have raised $100 or more in addition to their registration fee will be eligible for a prize drawing that takes place at 3:30 p.m. Prizes include a road bike from Gorham Bike & Ski in Portland, a season pass to Shawnee Peak, and a Bear Creek fiberglass canoe.
Walia said the event will only be canceled if there is extremely inclement weather. No refunds will be given to preregistered participants who do not attend the event.
