ORONO (AP) – Tailback Matt Lawrence rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns as Massachusetts rolled to a 38-7 victory over Maine on Saturday.

The Minutemen (4-0, 2-0 CAA) scored 21 points in the first eight minutes of the game. Lawrence turned in TD runs of 62, 4 and 1 yards.

Quarterback Liam Coen overcame an injury to his left knee and completed 15 of 19 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown. Tailback Tony Nelson ran for another 104 yards as Massachusetts piled up 431 yards of total offense, 289 via the run.

The Minutemen limited Maine (1-3, 0-2 CAA) to 243 yards, including only 67 through the air.

Lawrence broke a 62-yard run to open the scoring at the 13:13 mark of the first quarter, then Massachusetts cashed in on a Maine fumble 15 seconds later as Coen threw a 2-yard TD pass to Chris Zardas.

The Minutemen made it 21-0 with 9:53 to play in the quarter as a 4-yard jaunt by Lawrence capped a 52-yard scoring drive.

Maine was never able to mount a serious challenge and could not consistently stop the Massachusetts offense.

Quarterback Adam Farkes paced the Black Bears with 59 yards rushing and 67 yards passing on 6-for-16 accuracy.
