BUCKFIELD – The Buckfield Historical Society welcomed Connie Cushing as speaker at the Sept. 13 meeting. Cushing has been working with the Zadoc Long Free Library to archive old ledgers and papers that have been in storage in the library.
She brought with her ledgers from Co. C, 23rd Regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry, that covered the period from October 1862 to June 1863 when that company was involved in the Civil War.
Members were particularly interested because the captain of Co. C, Charles H. Prince, was born and died in Buckfield.
Members were able to look at lists of the men who served in the company and read some of the general orders that came down from headquarters to their company commanders.
Work is continuing on the materials with the hope that they will eventually be on the library’s Web site. The historical society meets at 11 a.m. the third Thursday of the month at the Buckfield Municipal Building. and everyone is welcome.
