I first opened a business office in downtown Lewiston in 1986. At that time, many stores were vacant, rundown – eyesores. At that time, the city sought ways to attract commerce.

As a member of the committee to promote downtown, I was appalled that the city officials insisted on driving people away from Lisbon Street through the overuse of parking meters and issuance of tickets. I said at the time that the city should be issuing car wash passes or movie tickets just to attract people.

Through the influence and objection of a few businesses catering to in-and-out customers, the city refused to consider other options. All of the parking was limited to one hour.

Today, almost 22 years later, I see the same small-minded, short-sighted activity happening. A quick trip through downtown shows it is still empty, rundown and largely devoid of business. A few attorneys have offices because the courthouse is close by. What else? Mostly municipal entities and parking garages that pay no taxes. Where is the business? Not there.

Would anyone go to Wal-Mart or Home Depot if they charged patrons to park?

Lewiston officials need to wake up. Junk the meters and lay off the meter maids. Try attracting taxpaying entities.

Last I knew, you attracted flies with honey, not a flyswatter.
