LEWISTON – A family budgeting workshop will be offered from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Multi-Purpose Center on Birch Street.

The workshop, led by a Women, Work and Community representative, will be a family event, with a reading of “The Three Little Pigs – a Financial Fairy Tale” by Mayor Laurent Gilbert Sr. There will be supervised activities for children while their parents attend the workshop.

It is being held as part of the Dollar Wise Campaign, a program of the United States Conference of Mayors that highlights the need for increased financial literacy nationwide.

Lewiston is the only city in Maine that is participating in the initiative, according to Gilbert. The city has joined three credit unions – Community Credit Union, Rainbow Federal Credit Union and Central Maine Credit Union – for Dollar Wise week.

Gilbert plans to visit each credit union to greet patrons and to make them aware of available financial education follow-up from either a participating credit union or the Lewiston-Auburn Tax Credit Awareness Coalition on topics such as savings, budgeting, credit card debt and home ownership.

“I look forward to meeting with folks, and letting them know that there are financial resources throughout our community that can be of tremendous assistance,” Gilbert said.
