TOPSHAM – The Lewiston Blue Devils get defensive whenever quarterback Josh DiBattista and his antagonistic Mt. Ararat Eagles are at the opposite end of a football field.

That’s why Lewiston coach Bill County paid more attention to Lewiston’s defensive corps in practice all week. He figured if his Devils could contain DiBattista and trigger key turnovers, everything would fall into place for Lewiston (5-0).

It did.

And while the Mt. Ararat quarterback was taking heat from the Devils’ defensive unit, Wesley Myers and Matt Letourneau did most of the heavy lifting on offense, steering undefeated Lewiston past the Eagles (3-2) with a 34-13 victory in a Class A football game Friday night.

Myers carried the ball on 27 occasions for 178 yards.

“At the half, we were pleased with our defensive scheme,” said County. “As you can see, we kept DiBattista in the box. We went straight defense all week.

“They (Eagles) had a lot of nice schemes. I thought Mt. Ararat did a great job adjusting. I think we wore them down. We are pretty big and strong up front.”

Lewiston’s girth and persistence paid off in the second half. After working up a sweat building a 14-6 lead in the first half, the Blue Devils knew 14 points weren’t going to hold against a team like the Eagles.

The Eagles came out swinging in the third quarter in a long drive that brought them to Lewiston’s 20-yard line. Mt. Ararat was stopped there when Alfonzo Brooks intercepted a pass. The Devils didn’t do much on their next possession.

It didn’t matter though. Lewiston got the ball back three plays later when a Mt. Ararat receiver caught the ball but then fumbled it. Myers picked it up and ran it back from the 42 to the 11. And the third play, Myers took it in from the 9 and scored his first of two touchdowns, giving Lewiston a 21-6 lead.

The Blue Devils put the game out of reach in the final stanza. Lewiston got the ball back on its 22 and moved to the 30 on Letourneau’s 8-yard rush. Myers got the ball on the next play and headed for open ground for 70 yards, scoring his second TD of the game. The conversion failed, but Lewiston was in firm control with a 27-6 lead.

“We shot ourselves in the foot offensively,” said Mt. Ararat coach Mark LaFountain. “They came out in the second half and did pretty much what they wanted to do.”

Not question about that.

The Devils blocked an Eagles kick late in the fourth quarter and got ball back on the 1. Myers delivered his third TD from there.

The Eagles came right back at Lewiston with a touchdown by Nick Dempsey, who also scored the first the Eagles first touchdown in the second quarter.

For the evening, Lewiston amassed 292 yards in rushing compared to Mt. Ararat’s 129 yards.
