RUMFORD – A home owned by Rhonda Hebert was destroyed by fire early Monday morning.
Fire Chief John Woulfe said the blaze was sparked by an unattended lit candle left in the living room of the home at Lincoln Avenue and Franklin Street.
In the few minutes that it took for firefighters to arrive, flames spread to three sides of century-old, one-and-a-half story wood-framed building.
A two-story home owned by Yvette Flaherty next door had damage to siding and two windows. A vehicle parked in her driveway also was damaged.
Woulfe said all three people living in the Hebert home escaped without injury. He said the building was insured.
Flames were knocked down by 1:30 a.m. Firefighters were at the scene until 5 a.m. No injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross is paying for the family’s accommodations at Linnell Motel on Route 2.
The Salvation Army Canteen provided food and water to the 30 or so firefighters from Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield at the fire.
Firefighters from Peru covered the Rumford fire station while the other departments fought the fire.
