BRUNSWICK – Winslow T. Bowie, 84, of Old County Road, Freeport, died Saturday, Sept. 29, at Mid Coast Hospital.

Win was born in Springvale, on July 24, 1923, the younger son of Granville H. Bowie and Anna (Clare) Bowie. He was raised in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1942.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of sergeant. As an assistant chief teletype operator, he supervised teletype communication equipment and operators for the 97th Signal Company in France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Czechoslavakia and, late in the war, Japan.

In 1947, after his discharge from active military service, he began a 37-year career with New England Telephone and Telegraph in Lewiston, a career interrupted only for further military service during the Korean conflict, when he was stationed in Pusan, Korea.

It was at New England Telephone and Telegraph that he met Mary Ann Parent, then a telephone operator. He and Mary were married on Nov. 14, 1953, and for the next 46 years they lived in Auburn, raising four children. At the time of his retirement in 1984, he was the most senior New England Telephone and Telegraph employee in the state of Maine.

For many years, he was active in Freemasonry and was a member of Ancient Brothers Lodge No. 178 in Auburn, as well as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.

He enjoyed collecting coins, carpentry and automobiles of every nature and description. Over the course of his life, he owned a variety of cars, a variety best described as eclectic, ranging from Packards to Mustangs to Morris Minors. Of more than one of his cars, it could truly be said they were the only ones of their kind seen on the streets of Auburn and Lewiston. He was a passionate recycler long before it was fashionable, and the family camp in East Harpswell, where he enjoyed spending summers throughout his life, remains a standing testament to that passion.

Above all, he was devoted to and loved his wife and family.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; four children, Daniel T. Bowie and wife, Debra, of Newburyport, Mass., Lisa C. Koenig and husband, Kris, of Durham, Linda M. Ingram and husband, Stephen, of Cohasset, Mass., and Laurie A. Trenholm and husband, Jon, of Cape Elizabeth; six grandchildren, Kendall and Andrew Bowie, Dylan and Natalie Koenig, Ryan Ingram, and the latest to bring a smile to his face (along with her puppy Max), Sara Trenholm; a sister-in-law, Evelyn M. Bowie of Standish; nephews, Granville H. Bowie III of Kennebunk and Scott O. Bowie of Weston, Conn.; and a niece, Cyndie Bowie of Scarborough.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Granville H. Bowie Jr.; his nephew, Dennis Bowie; and his granddaughter, Dana H. Bowie.
