CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – State Public Health officials say four more mosquito pools in New Hampshire have tested positive for potentially deadly Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
They were in Brentwood, Fremont, Kingston, and Newton. Previously, the state found infected mosquitoes in Newton and Brentwood.
Health officials say the discovery reinforces the need for residents and visitors to protect themselves against mosquitoes. They will be around until there is a killing frost.
Residents from Newfields and Newton have been diagnosed with the illness in recent weeks. A Scottish man diagnosed with the illness may have contracted the disease in the state or in Rhode Island.
Eastern Equine Encephalitis is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird or other animal. The risk to humans generally is low, but Triple-E can cause serious illness or death.
