BRUNSWICK – Maine native Duncan J. Cumming will perform a piano recital at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, on the Bowdoin College campus.

The concert in Studzinski Recital Hall, Kanbar Auditorium, is open to the public. Admission is free.

Cumming’s program will include Debussy’s Preludes V and VII, von Weber’s Sonata in C Major, Chopin’s Scherzo in B-flat minor and William Matthews’ Two Preludes.

Born in Presque Isle, Cumming grew up in Wiscasset and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with highest honors from Bates College in 1993.

He has performed concertos, recitals, and chamber music concerts in cities across the United States as well as in Europe. Performance venues inclulde the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Merkin Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York City, and the Wallenstein Palace in Prague.

Recipient of a full scholarship from the European Mozart Foundation, Cumming participated in intense chamber music study and performance at the European Mozart Academy in Prague in 1994. Upon his return to America, he earned his master’s degree at the New England Conservatory in 1996 and his doctorate from Boston University in 2003.

Known for his innovative and carefully constructed programs, Cumming often presents informal commentary to the audience on the music he plays. He has commissioned, premiered and recorded new works for solo piano, violin and piano, and piano trio.
