LEWISTON – Activation ceremonies for two reconfigured Maine Army National Guard units that include soldiers from the Lewiston and Norway areas will be held Saturday in Skowhegan and Westbrook.
The ceremony for the 136th Engineer Company will be held from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at 9 Armory Drive in Skowhegan.
The 262nd Engineer Company will be activated from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the State Armory on Stroudwater Avenue in Westbrook. The ceremonies are open to the public.
The new units are part of the Maine Army National Guard and U.S. Army’s transformation to a more versatile and flexible force, according to a prepared statement. They include members of the former Alpha, Bravo and Charlie companies of the 133rd Engineer Battalion, which retired their colors on Sept. 8.
The new engineer companies are transforming into independent companies but will remain under the command of the 133rd. The changes are expected to allow for greater mission flexibility for the U.S. Army in Iraq and Afghanistan. Under the reconfiguration, the 136th – with its headquarters in Skowhegan – will include carpenters, plumbers and electricians; the road builders that included most of Lewiston’s soldiers will serve with the 262nd, headquartered in Westbrook.
