RUMFORD – When things aren’t going right, adjustments are required, and the Mountain Valley Falcons did just that in the second half of its Class B Campbell Conference football game Saturday.
Senior Owen Jones caught touchdown passes of 64 and 54 yards and returned a punt 75 yards for another score as the Falcons remained unbeaten with a 52-0 triumph against Falmouth.
The game had been postponed from Friday because heavy rains had saturated Hosmer Field.
Mountain Valley looked uninspired while building a 26-0 lead by halftime.
“We certainly didn’t execute like we are capable,” Mountain Valley coach Jim Aylward said. “The team came out and hit hard in the second half, but that’s not good enough. Our offensive line wasn’t blocking well, but we made some big plays. (Still) you can bet that York will be ready for us next week.”
The Falcons received a spark when Josh Bennett recovered a fumble on the Falmouth 5-yard line. Justin Staires (104 yards, 16 rushes) scored on the next play.
Dean McCrillis later caught a 5-yard touchdown pass and fullbacks Matt Laubauskas and Derek Sicotte each scored on short runs.
“We each have different roles on this team, and that’s fine with us,” Staires said. “There’s 11 players on the field, and if nine are doing their job on a play, then it (usually) works out.”
The Falcons received the second-half kickoff and broke things open. Owens burned the Falmouth secondary with two long receptions. Staires tossed the 64-yarder, and on the next possession, Keith Brennick threw a pass that covered 54 yards.
“We came out fired up and ready to play in the second half,” Jones said. “Those passes were wide-open because we ran some double handoffs, and their defensive backs cheated-up.”
Falmouth (2-5) exposed the Falcons’ soft secondary as quarterback Stefano Mancini completed nine of 28 passes for 81 yards. Receivers Sam Dunwoody and Kyle Buchanan helped substain a drive to the MV 26 before turning the ball over on downs.
The Falcon defense, led by Ryan Cormier, Matt Duka and Laubauskas, allowed 1 yard rushing for the game.
Travis Ruff returned a fumble 21 yards for a score following McCrillis’ hit on Mancini. Chris Day also recovered a fumble and Brady Fergola blocked a punt.
Mountain Valley had trouble getting in rhythm on offense and only generated a 74-yard, 10-play drive late in the first half. Field position was a factor with three drives beginning deep in Falmouth territory. McCrillis caught Staires’ halfback option and the duo also combined on a two-point conversion.
“Falmouth came to play, but the coaches had warned us about them,” Sicotte said “Once this team gets a lead we go after it, like we did in the second half. We want them to know this is Hosmer Field, and we are here to play.”
