Babysitter course

TURNER – SAD 52 Adult and Community Education is offering babysitter training Oct. 16 through Dec. 4.

Students age 11 to 15 will learn to provide care for small children. The course includes child and infant CPR certification. Students must attend all classes and pass the CPR test to receive certification.

The class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Turner Elementary School. Call the Adult Ed office at 225-3478 to register.

Society to meet

POLAND – The Wednesday, Oct. 17, meeting of the Poland Historical Society will be held at 7 p.m. at the Old Schoolhouse next to the Poland Town Office. The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served following the meeting. The November meeting has been changed from Wednesday, Nov. 21, to 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

Kiwanis to install

LEWISTON – Patti Gage, Auburn Lewiston Kiwanis Club president, has invited all members and former Kiwanians to attend the annual meeting to install the incoming officers and directors at noon Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Ramada Inn.

The officers are John Cronin, president; Mike Meservier, vice president; and Jolene Daigle, president-elect. Continuing in office are Craig Phillips, secretary, and Larry Lauze, treasurer.

Board members are Andy Choate, Patti Gagne, Doug Dwinal, Dan Goff and Roy Ulrickson.

Book discussion

AUBURN – The Auburn Public Library book discussion at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, will feature “The Greatest Generation” by Tom Brokaw. Brokaw honors the generation of Americans that came of age during the Great Depression and World War II by capturing and sharing their stories of sacrifice, honor and duty.

Distribution day

AUBURN – Auburn AC Serve, a part of Serve New England’s food and volunteer program, will have its Distribution Day from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Auburn Advent Christian Church, 263 Turner St., Whitney Street entrance.

DeMolay to elect

AUBURN – The Knights of the Sun Chapter, Order of DeMolay for Boys, will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Auburn Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St. All members are encouraged to attend.

Scout night

POLAND – Girl Scouts of Maine will hold a parent information and registration night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Ricker Memorial Library.

Girl Scouts of Maine serves more than 14,000 girls ages 5 to 17 statewide. Parents will learn about the Girl Scouting opportunities that are available in the community. Girl Scouts of Maine also has many volunteer options for adults.

Friends to celebrate

POLAND – The Friends of Ricker Memorial Library invite residents to help celebrate National Friends of Library Week from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. Refreshments will be served and members of the Friends will be available to explain the importance of the group and the activities for 2007-2008.

Members will also host “A Guess the Author Game” for children and adults. A correct guess means that the name will be put in a drawing to win a Friends book bag.

Katrina project

AUBURN – Twenty-five First Universalist Church members and friends are traveling to New Orleans over Thanksgiving to work with a post-Katrina rebuilding project set up by volunteers from the UU Church in Rockland.

Anyone who would like to be a “Distance Volunteer” or businesses that would like to support the group are invited to donate. People are asked to make the check out to the church and mark the memo line “New Orleans Volunteer Trip.” Checks may be sent to the church office, 159 Pleasant St., Auburn 04210, attn: Cindy Greathouse.

A benefit family event featuring Cajun food, a dance and music will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, with Jimmyjo and the Jumbol’ayuhs. Tickets may be obtained through LA Arts at 782-7228; $10 adults/$8 students and seniors. Proceeds will benefit the trip. For more information, call 783-0461.
