AUGUSTA (AP) – Republican Sen. Susan Collins reported Monday she raised more than $1 million for her re-election campaign from July through September, bringing her total contributions to date to $3.6 million, with $3.1 million in cash on hand.
The campaign of Democratic challenger Tom Allen, the sixth-term congressman from Portland, reported receipts of $666,096 for the quarter, raising his total contributions for this election cycle to $2.2 million. Allen reported having $2.1 million on hand.
The Collins organization issued a statement expressing satisfaction with her fundraising performance “this early in the election cycle” and said the campaign was “on track to have the resources we will need to run a good campaign.”
On the Democratic side, “Our grassroots support continues to be strong with thousands of individuals contributing largely based on Tom Allen’s consistent opposition to the war in Iraq,” Allen campaign manager Valerie Martin said in a statement.
Sporadic campaign sparring so far has been amplified by Democratic and Republican party spokesmen.
Collins, running for a third Senate term, has been taken to task by Democrats for backing off a pledge to serve no more than two terms. Missed votes by Allen have been contrasted by Republicans with Collins’ long-standing attendance record.
Earlier this month, the Allen campaign noted that Republicans had criticized him for missing votes to attend the funeral of a family member in Bangor.
