• VALLEY FORGE, PA., – In the presence of a large assemblage of men prominent in Maine and Pennsylvania, a monument to the memories of soldiers from the state of Maine, who were at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778, was unveiled this afternoon at the historic camp.
• The Honorable William B. Skelton of Lewiston, with T.N. Gagne, treasurer of the Lake Auburn Ice Co., and E.P. Langley, one of the members of the firm, were in Portland Tuesday attending the trial of the suit brought against the ice company by John Chisholm of Portland. Chisholm alleges that $55 is due him as commission on a sale of 1,000 tons of ice in August last year.

WASHINGTON – Queen Elizabeth II came to Washington today and captured the capital’s heart with both her gaiety at a parade and her solemnity at a tribute to war dead.
LIMESTONE – The first tanker assigned to an operational Air Force unit flew into Loring Air Force Base today from Seattle, Wash. Maj. Willie H. Sonntag of Frisco, Texas, commander of the plane, said the huge KC-135 covered the 2,420 miles in four hours at an average speed of 600 miles an hour.
PORTLAND – The Maine Gideons Convention announced tonight that every hotel and motel in the state of Maine will have Gideon bibles by July.

In an effort to free sheriff’s deputies for other duties and reduce costs, a new collect-call telephone system for inmates has been installed in the Androscoggin County Jail.
Two penitentiary telephones were installed earlier this month by New England Telephone Co., according to Androscoggin County Sheriff Joseph P. Laliberte.
But unlike other phones, only collect-calls can be made from the phones, Laliberte said. He estimated that up to two hours per day was lost previously in work time while deputies had to place and wait for prisoners to complete calls.
